I
began breeding Russells in 1981 with my husband, Paul Ross. Paul
grew up in England and had a long interest in working terriers.
He brought the first of Eddie Chapman’s Foxwarren lines and
Derek Hume’s Shotley Bridge lines into the US, and therein was
one of the founders of the breed in this country. Paul and I
bred and exhibited Russells under the ‘Blencathra’ prefix.
Together we founded the Jack Russell Terrier Breeders
Association (JRTBA), which ultimately became the Parson Russell
Terrier Association (PRTAA), the AKC Parent Club today. Paul
returned to England in 1987 and I stayed in the US. I added
David Jones’s bloodlines to my stock, and began breeding
Russells under the ‘Parson’ prefix. I continued to work in the
PRTAA; achieving AKC recognition, drafting the AKC Breed
Standard and editing the AKC Gazette column. I have just helped
complete a CD on the breed.
As
Parson Kennels, I focused on three major bloodlines, those of
Eddie Chapman (Foxwarren) from the south of England, Derek Hume
(Shotley Bridge) from the north of England and David Jones
(Jones) from Wales. I had the great pleasure of having Eddie and
Derek as guests in my home in New Hampshire and I have stayed
with Eddie, Derek and David in England. I have known the great
and famous people and terriers in the breed, and had my hands on
Russells back at least 30 generations. Derek's Imis of Willowall,
and David Jones’ Sage of Wyndcroft were of particular importance
to my lines.
Parson and Blencathra Kennels bred eight Specialty BISS and six
National Specialty BISS, and sired many other Specialty winners.
I am incredibly proud and honored to have lived with these fine
terriers.
My
philosophy has always been that the time in the show ring was
mine, but the time in the woods was my terriers, and I always
balanced the two, with time in the woods far outweighing time in
the ring. My terriers are in the woods every day, and they are
truly fit in mind and body. They hunt, dig, swim, follow their
noses and follow quarry. My terriers are natural show dogs. They
are on in the ring and their expectation is high because they
live a working terrier’s life.
I have three young
males at stud,
Ch The Bully Pulpit, ‘Teddy’, here in New
Hampshire,
Ch Mystic Masquerade, ‘Jester’ in
Massachusetts, and
Ch Parson Puck Fair, ‘Declan’, in
Michigan.
Teddy sired the 2007
Westminster Kennel Club Breed winner, Ch Upper Valley Make My
Day.
